Sukeban – Rebellion & Zugehörigkeit
-Omen of downfall-
This collection is inspired by the modification of school uniforms made by members of ‘sukeban’ gangs in Japan between the 1960s and 1980s. These groups of high school girls fought against patriarchal structures and expectations put upon them by rebelling through petty crimes and changing their school uniforms, thus becoming an important symbol of feminism & self-expression. Their pleated skirts became longer, their blouses cropped, their new uniforms adorned by handstitched logos and mantras – a lively expression of their identity as individuals, gang members and women in conservative societies. Through embracing modernity and combining it with the timeless silhouettes and aspects of school uniforms, a story of individuality, yet belonging gets explored with each design and outfit. This is achieved through classic aspects of uniforms mixed with rebellious street style elements, a set colour palette and self-designed flower motives.
