Once Upon a time
is a collection that deals primarily with the deeper meaning of the fairy tale Cinderella and how it reflects the social image of women at that time. It addresses the oppression and restrictions that women had to endure both physically, in the form of clothing, and socially.
The fashion of the renaissance in particular is highly idealised in fairy tales, films and plays. “The beautiful princess marries the heroic prince who rescued her from a terrible situation, she’s wearing a magnificent dress”. The reality of this time is often ignored.
I try to highlight this reality of the renaissance clothing, which is not usually apparent at first glance. It is important to me to emphasise that this is not about idealising the clothing of that time, quite the contrary. In my collection, I want to use garments such as corsets and hoop skirts in an unusually way to clearly illustrate the lack of freedom of movement that this clothing entails.
The aim of my collection is to break down the idealised fairy-tale image of the Renaissance and Baroque periods and to highlight the sad truth of this era.
