Virginity
“The Virgin Suicides“ by Sofia Coppola serves as the point of departure for my
debut collection. it tells the story of five daugthers raised in a strictly
christian household, whose lives are shaped by control, limitation and emotional
isolation. their attemps to reach out to the outside world and to find
understanding from the neighboring boys who watch them from a distance remain
unscuccessful. in their surroundings, their value is largely reduced to the
protection of their virginity.
this collection speaks of expression and loneliness while also showing moments of
resistance and self determination within a male dominated system.
through the use of covering and transparency, the work explores vulnerability,
exposure and the body as a site of control.
the collection asks whether the idea of virginity becomes a harmful ideal placed
upon girls.
it is an attempt to make lived realities more visible.
